“Learn something new every year!”

This was one of my many New Year’s resolutions for 2015. Usually I don’t stick to them, but this one was fun and adventure and finally it really was the first big New Year’s resolution I ever followed through.

The “new thing” I learned last year turned out to be the key to a totally new world.

A world that – until then – I only scratched a tiny bit at the surface. And a world that is so fascinating that I want to discover more and more.

“Open Water Diving License” is the new thing I learned!

It is Chinese New Year 2015 and I want to turn my New Year’s resolution into action.

I heard that the best place to get a license is Koh Tao – Thailand, because there are lots of Diving schools and the island is beautiful.

Indeed – there are lots of diving schools on the little island and after some online research I finally picked Ban’s Diving Resort. One of the bigger schools with a good reputation and they offered different time schedules.

The initial plan was to get the “Open Water license”, but after one awesome day under water it was pretty clear to continue and get an “Advanced Open Water license”.

First time under water already got me. The colors, the corals, the life under water is absolutely fascinating and so beautiful.

The feeling of being weightless and just floating along, taking it all in, is amazing.

It was an incredible experience – I enjoyed every minute under water.

I even saw a shark – slowly swimming in the distance. That was such an exciting moment, I got completely distracted and almost missed my diving buddy…

All in all I had a total of 9 dives and some theory lessons with exam until I got the Advanced Open Water license.

One of the dives was a night dive. Personally I think it was the first and last time I did a night dive. There is not a lot to see at night and it is very exhausting.

We were a fun group of around 10 people and 4 instructors doing the Open Water License. For the advanced we were only 3 + instructor. Perfect!

On the last dive I had the chance to take my GoPro with me. Unfortunately most of the photos turned out blurry…. I have to do some research on proper underwater photos.

Most of our dives were around Chumphon Pinnacle, Red Rock, White Rock and Twin Peaks. Back then I thought those were amazing dive sites, but it even got better when I went diving around Phuket and Koh Phi Phi later that year. But for a newbie to diving and having just entered a little step into a new world, this was still fascinating and totally mind-blowing.

Right now I just did my 21st dive. Still a newbie!

The diving license was definitely the best New Year’s resolution!

So what’s the next new thing to learn…?

Cheers a*
